Journalism - A flood of data
Journalism has begun to change over the past few years with the arrival of blogs, social media and participative tools.
A world of flows
To adapt to the digital age, to all-out technology and to king content, many media have begun to chain produce continuous flows of information for the sake of flows. Journalists are asked to write ever shorter pieces faster and faster. They produce immediate, hyper-reactive information that is broadcast superficially and emotionally at very high speed. Data "flows" have replaced information presented by journalists trained to investigate, to report and to tell. This flood of data makes it difficult for anyone trying to find the information they need to build meaning from all of the sources available.
The return of the experts
However, in the face of this flood of data, the public is now more than ever asking for information and analysis. There is a need for new experts, for people able to gather meaningful data to help visualise reality. This has given rise to the concept of networked journalism. The role of the journalist is now closer to that of a project manager responsible for finding experts on a document-by-document basis to help analyse, format and extract relevant information. They must be able to extract relevant data from the informational chaos, to use the data to provide an analysis of the causes and consequences of a complex event, to update the data in real-time and to organise the broadcast of content to best meet the expectations of various audiences.
